Longmont City Forrester Ken Wicklund will speak about the Emerald Ash Borer, an invasive species that has decimated millions of trees in the U.S. and Canada and has recently been found in Boulder. Learn how to spot this insect’s telltale signs and protect your trees during Ken’s presentation at the Longmont Public Library, May 17 from 7:00 to 8:00 pm. Register online.
Pine River Library and the Pine River Garden Club will host a Tree Planting Program, May 12 from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm. Montezuma Orchard Restoration Project (MORP) will give a brief presentation and about their work and tree planting; the event will culminate with the hands-on planting of two apple trees in the library garden.
Grand County Library District presents Gardening at Altitude, May 10 from 5:30 to 6:30 pm at Granby Library. Travis Hoesli, CSU Extension Agent and Director for Grand County, will discuss the basics and tips for vegetable gardening.
Learn all about Backyard Composting at Lafayette Public Library, May 7 from 6:00 to 7:00 pm. Boulder County Resource Conservation District will present tips on getting started, climate, bins, and more.

Dolores Public Library has lawn games available for checkout—perfect for family gatherings and the upcoming cookout season.
Lamar Public Library’s Give Back Project series focuses on a new community project each month. Learn more about May’s project: Neighborhood/Park Cleanup.
On May 14, Eagle Valley Library District will open its Spark Studio, a newly designed space for creativity with open access to 21st century tools and technology. The studio will feature a 3D printer and scanner, an Oculus Rift, digital cameras, design software, and more.
Join CSU professor Dr. Dawn Grapes, PhD, for her Composer Talk series at Poudre River Public Library District. The next concert and talk, Masterworks 5: Fate, Fancy & Fantastic, will be at the Old Town Library on May 9 from 12:00 to 1:00 pm.
Lenore Raphael, jazz piano, and Wayne Wilkinson, guitar, will perform True Jazz, a concert at Basalt Regional Library on May 18 from 5:30 to 6:30 pm.

The Daily Camera reports that Robert H. McDonald has been selected as the new dean of University Libraries at CU Boulder (full story). He is currently the associate dean for research and technology strategies and a librarian at Indiana University.
